Safeguarding information for adults on site at Gan Kinneret Nursery

All children have the right to grow up safe from harm. No child should experience harm either at home or at nursery. Adults at Gan Kinneret Nursery all have a part to play in keeping children safe, and we must also take steps to keep ourselves safe too.

Safeguarding team

At Gan Kinneret we have a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and two Deputy Safeguarding Leads (DDSL) who are responsible for safeguarding and child protection.

  • Head Teacher: Dina Samson
  • Manager / DSL: Lucy Samson
  • Deputy Managers / DDSLs: Alexandra Boacara and Cara Miskin

If you are worried about the safety of any of the children at Gan Kinneret Nursery, you must report it to a member of the Safeguarding Team or the Head Teacher, Dina Samson.

Anyone is entitled to report a concern that a child is at risk to the Barnet Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) on 020 8359 4066.

You can also contact Ofsted on 0300 123 1231 if you have any concerns about the nursery.

Please speak to the DSL or a DDSL if you need any clarification about any of the information contained in this leaflet.

Keeping yourself safe

  • Be professional. Be careful how you interact with or speak to a child – the child may interpret it differently.
  • Avoid physical contact with children unless you are preventing them from immediately harming themselves or others.
  • Avoid being on your own with a child. Always ensure that a door is open and that you are visible to others.
  • It is best not to do anything for a child that he or she can do for themselves.
  • Always tell someone if a child touches you or speaks to you inappropriately. Log the incident, including time and date, and pass it to one of the safeguarding team.
  • If you have concerns about the conduct of staff, it is your responsibility to report it to the Head Teacher or Manager.
  • Familiarise yourself with nursery policies, which are located in the office.

If a child discloses information to you

  • Never promise confidentiality.
  • Do not prompt or ask leading questions.
  • Reassure the child that they have done the right thing in making the disclosure.
  • Listen carefully, make accurate and detailed notes immediately, using the child’s own words, and pass them to a DSL.

The matter will then be investigated in accordance with the nursery’s Safeguarding Policy.

If in doubt… ask.

Health and Safety at Gan Kinneret

Health and Safety Officers: Mrs Lucy Samson and Mrs Cara Miskin.

At Gan Kinneret, health and safety is of utmost importance for all pupils, staff and visitors. We ask you to comply with safety procedures for your own protection and for the protection of others who may be affected by your actions.

Visitors

  • On arrival, all visitors must sign in at the front of the nursery. On leaving, visitors must sign out.
  • The nursery reserves the right to ask for photographic identification on arrival.
  • Parents visiting during normal drop off/collection times are not required to sign in, but must do so if on site for any other purpose.
  • Vehicles belonging to visitors/parents are parked at the owner’s risk and must be parked in designated areas and must not cause any obstruction.

First aid

If you require first aid during your visit, please contact the office or a member of staff immediately. We currently have 11 members of staff who are first aid trained and able to support you.

Personal devices and photography

Mobile phones

  • To protect our children, we respectfully ask that you do not have your phone out or use it during your time in the nursery building.
  • If this is an issue, please contact a member of staff on arrival.

Photographs

  • Under no circumstances should you take photographs, videos or voice recordings of our children whilst on the nursery site without the explicit consent of the Head Teacher or Manager.

Security

  • Gan Kinneret has three highly trained security personnel who ensure the safety of all children, staff and visitors on site.
  • Security staff and nursery staff are aware of emergency procedures (evacuation and invacuation).
  • We practise invacuation drills with the children in a game format where children find our ‘secret room’ and play hide and seek.
  • We remain in constant contact with CST and are aware of any risks in our area.
  • Guards have constant radio communication with CST.
  • Security ensure all gates and doors remain locked and guarded.
  • We use security cameras to provide a view around the whole building to ensure children’s safety.

What can you do to help?

  • Remain vigilant at all times and report anything suspicious to CST (0800 032 3263), the nursery and 999 in an emergency.
  • Be aware of suspicious people, activities, parked cars and unattended items.
  • Avoid congregating outside the nursery and synagogue – please disperse quickly after leaving.
  • Prevent tailgating – do not allow anyone to follow you into the building when gates or doors are open.
  • Please do not spread misinformation, especially on social media.

Fire alarm and evacuation

The fire alarm is an intermittent siren. On hearing this sound, please immediately evacuate the building.

  • Allow nursery staff to bring the children out and only help if asked to do so.
  • Make your way to the playground where a member of staff will register you.
  • Follow the instructions of the fire marshal.
  • Only return to the building once authorisation has been given.

Shelter alarm (intruder alarm)

The intruder alarm is a very loud, continuous siren. On hearing this you should immediately seek shelter.

  • Stay away from any windows and doors.
  • Wait for instruction from our security officers.
  • The siren will continue until the threat has passed and the ‘all clear’ has been given.
